Metropac then and now.
The history of Metropac Industries goes back over
75 years. Founder Bert Cosentino realized there was a growing demand for oil heating equipment parts and service, a demand not being met. So in 1937 when the country was beginning to feel the effects of the Great Depression, Cosentino set up a small parts shop in a garage in Everett, Ma. He called the business Metro Supply Company.
Cosentino's mission was to acquire an
inventory of hard to find aftermarket parts for heating systems by repairing equipment, components, and the parts themselves, and by collecting used parts and pieces.
Cosentino understood the variety of needs of his customers, so in addition to the
supply operations, Metro Supply was doing some assembly and manufacturing. Among the assortment of products manufactured by Metro Supply were its unique
water/air furnaces, shell-head oil burners and Quiet-Flame water heaters.
Eventually Metro Supply gained a reputation as "the largest Oil Burner Specialty House in New England." The business grew, the garage had to be rebuilt to better house the inventory and to service the many customers.
In the early 1950's, Cosentino gave Metro Supply a new and modern name: Metropac Industries. Metropac Industries
later went on to purchase the Tux and
Autopulse divisions from Walbro Corp. and continued producing those lines into the early 1980's. Metropac found itself stocking more
and more items from other manufactures until eventually they got out of manufacturing entirely
in order to concentrate their efforts solely on wholesale distribution. Today under the
direction of Ronnie Cosentino Jr., Bert's grandson, Metropac Industries has
developed a customer base of over 3,000 wholesalers and OEMs in the U.S. as
well as Canada and Puerto Rico. With over 50 product lines in stock their
inventory encompasses all areas of the hvac/r market, from residential and
commercial controls to draft controls and venting equipment to hydronic and steam specialties. Wholesalers nationwide count on Metropac to have the oddball and hard to find items as well as normal stock items in stock and ready to ship the same day. Metropac is known in the industry for offering low pricing, technical knowledge and unsurpassed service.
A major factor in Metropac's success is their continual commitment to technological advances. A major investment in distribution management software permitted Metropac to maintain one of the highest order fill rates in the industry while keeping their prices among the lowest. With the opening of their new fully automated distribution facility in June of 1999, Metropac was able to implement such technologies as rf (radio frequency) bar coding, E.D.I. (electronic data interchange) and enhance the proficiency of their real time web order entry system.
Metropac's sales team is a major factor to Metropac's success. Each sales
representative receives continual training on the 50+ product lines Metropac carries. They pride themselves on having the technical ability and willingness to go that extra mile for their customer.
